Composition Dolls

Composition dolls are made with composition, a mixture of glue and sawdust. It's heavier than paper mache but easily moldable, so it's the perfect material to make dolls - especially doll heads.

Composition dolls originated in the early 20th century in the United States of America. Composition dolls were praised by American doll makers because they are much more reliable and less fragile than bisque dolls, which were the rage of the time. The substance itself helped to make America the number one doll making country, beating out its rival Germany.

Composition dolls are dated back to 1909 and were manufactured through the 1950s. They were the most popular between the 1920s and 1940s. Today, there are very few dolls made from composition.
Composition Dolls
Composition Dolls Composition dolls come in nearly all shapes and sizes, but you'll typically find larger dolls than smaller ones. Very small composition dolls that are only a few inches long were manufactured, but they're very rare. Much larger composition dolls were not made of all composition; only the dolls' heads were made of composition. A large all-composition doll would be much too difficult for a child to lift and carry.
