Japanese Tea Sets

Japanese tea sets stem all the way back to the 12th century, although it is documented that the Japanese began drinking tea three centuries before that. In the Japanese culture, tea serving and drinking was often looked at as a sacred and important act that is performed (first adopted by Zen Buddhists). Thus, Japanese tea ceremonies often took place in temples, homes, teahouses, and at parties. Instead of a standard kettle and saucers, as is done in England, there are other components and pieces involved in Japanese tea ceremonies, including “chakin,” or a white cloth to cleanse the bowl after use, bamboo ladles to transfer tea from a community pot to personal cups, as well as ornate tea caddies, tea bowls, and a whisk to ritualistically cleanse the tea.
Japanese Tea Sets
Japanese Tea Sets Japanese tea sets come in an array of textures, colors and design. The mid 1800s until around 1900, there was a huge rush of tea sets, which were purchased by travelers in Western Europe as well as North America. A substantial number of these tea sets have signatures and dates on the bottom of their items. Often times these items were hand-painted, and are distinct from the region they were created in.
