Nazi Coins - Currency of The Third Reich

Nazi coins began appearing in Adolf Hitler's Third Reich Germany in the late 1930s. Nazi coins, such as the 2 Reichs Mark featured on this page, usually depicted an eagle perched atop a circular wreath containing the Nazi swastika on the reverse side. A likeness of the late President Paul von Hindenburg appeared on the obverse.

Nazi coins of The Third Reich continued to be produced right up until the defeat of Hitler's Germany in 1945, although the quality and metallic compostion of the coins had changed by then. Misstrikes were common in the later years, and aluminum replaced nickel while zinc was used for smaller denominations. Some coins had holes in the middle.

Nazi Coins - Currency of The Third Reich Typical denominations for Nazi coins were the 1, 2, 5 and 10 Reichspfennig right up to the 1, 2, and 5 Reichsmark coins. Paper banknotes were also issued by the Third Reich, but one of the reasons the Nazis were able to gain power in the early 1930s was rampant inflation in the old papiermark. The original Reichsmark was backed by gold, thus reducing or eliminating the severe inflation risk for German currency.
