Royal Doulton porcelain marks began appearing in 1901, shortly after King Edward VII granted that designation to the products manufactured by the Doulton manufactories in Burslem and Lambeth. Previous Doulton porcelain began being marked as such beginning in the late 1870s.
Having acquired Pinder Bourne & Company in Burslem, the Doulton brothers at first used the existing "P. B." marks already on the inherited stock. Other early marks include the words Kew and Rouen.

By 1891, the words Doulton Burslem and England are shown, along with a coronet. Starting in 1902 following the king's designation, a lion appears on the mark along with a crown.
Eventually, the words Fine English China are shown on pieces manufactured to this day. Variations are "English Translucent China" and "Fine Bone China".
