The Matthew-Tyndale Bible was completed in 1537, and it was the only bible translated into Modern English at that time. The bible is made out of rag cotton linen sheets so the bible sheets or leafs that are still available today are typically in good condition. There is only one original printed version of the bible left and it is located now at the British Museum. They paid two million dollars for it over fifty years ago.
The original author was William Tyndale. He worked to translate the bible from Hebrew and Greek into English even though it was against the law. For his betrayal, he was executed before finishing the New Testament translation. His friend John “Matthew Thomas” Rogers picked up where he left off and produced the bible in 1537.

The Roman Catholic Church and the Church of England both believed that the priests should only read the bible and only at church. Common people did not have bibles in their home like we do today. William Tyndale set out to change who had access to the bible and at the same time he used more common phrases to make it easier to understand. Not only did this version use more layman’s terms but in addition was also the first to use the name Jehovah for Jesus Christ.
