Acanthus motif is a flowing leafy decoration originally employed in ancient Greece and has been revived in use since the renaissance. Once appearing on the capitals of Corinthian columns, the acanthus design has migrated to furniture, fabric, and other works of art.

The inspiration for the acanthus motif design is the acanthus plant or bush. Not surprisingly, it is native to the Mediterranean and Asia Minor, the area of which included ancient Greece and ancient Rome. The acanthus has pinnately lobed leaves at the base and the tips are spiny or pointed. It sports purple flowers and is also known as bear's breech.
