Adams & Company

Adams & Company (originally named Adams, Mackin and Co.) produced pressed glass in Pittsburgh, PA from 1851-1891. It was owned and operated by John Adams and his two sons. Adams & Company pressed glass became quite popular.

Pressed glass is defined by unified glass that had its pattern developed by having a plunger thrust into the mold while it was still hot. This procedure made it affordable for the average citizens to have pieces that were decorative around the house but not as expensive as hand blown glass. The process to produce pressed glass came at a time where the blue collar workers and their wives were interested in buying more luxurious items for around the house.

Adams & Company created many different series of dinnerware, lamps, cake stands, candy dishes, bread plates and vases. The series ranged from very plain pressed glass to detailed engraving through religious statements, history designs (including the Sphynx), and even some with John Adams himself in the pattern.

They had produced some called Gypsy Pots with lids that are very rare today. By 1885 Adams & Company was not only offering their series through clear pressed glass with plain or detailed patters but also they had started to introduce series that they called “New Tinted Glass”. These pieces came in blue, green and amber colors. These colors came through in the glass as tints rather than true color.
