Affleck, Thomas

Thomas Affleck was one of America's foremost cabinetmakers, drawing his inspiration from another Thomas - Thomas Chippendale. Born in Aberdeen, Scotland in 1745, Thomas Affleck learned his trade in London and by 1763 had moved to Philadelphia in The Colonies.

Many of Thomas Affleck's works in the Chippendale style have survived to the present day. He conducted business from his own shop on Second Street in Philadelpia and thrived thanks in part to his connections to well-heeled Quakers in the city.
Affleck, Thomas
Affleck, Thomas Thomas Afflect also employed some of the best wood carvers of his day, such as James Reynolds, Nicholas Bernard, and Martin Jugiez. He died in 1795 after living through the transition from colonial to The United States of America.

The pictures on this page display the typical Chippendale motif of the day, including the ball and claw and ornate floral undertrimmings.
