Ambrosius Lamm

Ambrosius Lamm got his start as a decorator of porcelain in the historic German city of Dresden. Ambrosius Lamm was considered one of the most sought after porcelain decorators in the Dresden style at this time in history. Dresden porcelain is often referred to as Meissen porcelain.

Due to the close geographical proximity of the city of Dresden and the town of Meissen, many people continue to confuse the two of them even today. Although Dresden was the location where the secret of hard paste porcelain was discovered, much of the manufacturing of this type of porcelain actually occurred in Meissen.

Ambrosius Lamm also decorated porcelain using the Kopenhagen style as well as the Meissen style. He was known as a perfectionist and was very particular about which items he chose to decorate. In fact, due to his perfectionism, Ambrosius Lamm would only decorate those items that he received from famous porcelain manufacturers in Meissen. He began his business of decorating porcelain in 1887.

Ambrosius Lamm The Alt-Dresden method of decorating porcelain became the preferred style for Ambrosius Lamm around 1906. Alt-Dresden is a combination of the Dresden decorating method with an emphasis on the arrangement of flowers. Ambrosius Lamm also enjoyed decorating porcelain using the flowery influences of Antoine Watteau, a Rocco painter from France during the late 17th and early 18th centuries. Mythology was also a favorite decorative influence of Ambrosius Lamm.

By about 1934, Ambrosius Lamm retired from decorating porcelain. His daughter took the helm of his porcelain business along with a partner, Rudolf Pitschke. Rudolf Pitschke had previously worked for Ambrosius Lamm. Little is known of the porcelain business of Ambrosius Lamm after this time. It is believed that the porcelain business managed to survive, at least for a time, even after it was adversely affected by the 1944 bombing of the city of Dresden during World War II.
