Antique Cast Iron Stoves

The antique cast iron stove is usually thought of as American or even European invention, but has a beginning in the French era of 1840 by those Frenchmen like Jean-Baptiste Andre Godin. Godin had recognized how important cast iron was for stoves and fireplaces. These cast iron stoves were important in so many ways during the 19th Century. Cast iron is a combination of three to four percent carbon and up to six percent silica that would be combined in various styles of cast molds. Since cast iron stoves were massed produced, they are a uniquely variety of being considered under the label of “Antiques”.

Although Godin did have a corner on the market of stove making: there were earlier forms and mixtures used by others at the beginning of the wooden stove era. Before the cast iron stove, the very earliest stoves were made of many various materials and styles. These beautifully decorated ceramic stoves were before the mass made cast iron stoves and they are the rarest of rare in the antique world because they were built into the palaces through out Europe. The ceramic stove had the ability to absorb and store heat very well, but in the end cast iron stoves won out because of their extra strengths and abilities to work just as well without inevitable heat damage.
