Bakelite jewelry

The primary ingredient of Bakelite jewelry was originally intended for industrial use. Bakelite became popular among jewelers because they found this light, castable, and fire-resistant type of plastic ideal for making different jewelry items. Its popularity soared during the 1930's and 40's, when a wide range of colors was used in making these items and top jewelers began manufacturing them. Among the best vintage Bakelite jewelry pieces were pins, bangles, necklaces, rings, bracelets and so on.

Some jewelers are known to make new Bakelite jewelry using bigger pieces of old Bakelite items like radios. Many such newly created items are extremely attractive, and the best thing about these is that makers make no attempt to hide their vintage origins.

There are a few simple tests that can distinguish genuine Bakelite from look-alikes like Celluloid and Lucite. Although 409 and hot water tests are reasonably reliable, there are some fakes so designed that they can comfortably get through these examinations. It is, therefore, wise to collect your Bakelite from an experienced, trusted dealer. There should also be no hesitation in asking the dealer for verification that the Bakelite item you are interested in is authentic.
