Blanc de Chine

Blanc de Chine is a French term that means “the white of China.” Appearing in the Song Dynasty around 960, it is a porcelain that has been a favorite among the Chinese culture for hundreds of years.

Blanc de Chine’s beautiful white color resembles ivory, and white is a very important color in Chinese culture. It stands for purity, and also the color of mourning. Many intricate and beautiful statues have been sculpted from this porcelain to resemble Gods of the Buddhist faith.

There are three different types of Blanc de Chine. The first form is sculpted into religious figures. These usually pertain to Taoist or Buddhist faiths. The second form of Blanc de Chine are everyday items that people have in their homes. These are items like bowls, cups, teapots and plates.

Even though called the “white of China,” sometimes the color has blue or red hues. They can still be named Blanc de Chine if made in the same manner as the originals.
