Carriage Clock

Carriage clocks were once considered very fashionable to own, with nearly every family of means having at least one on a mantle or table. Anyone of means who did any amount of traveling had one of these in tow as an essential piece within their luggage. Because they were built so well, they were ideal for taking along on bumpy and unpredictable carriage rides. Many of the models also had sturdy leather cases and handles which allowed them to be stowed at a moment’s notice. They were popular in the early part of the 19th century.

Many of the early clocks were plain and well constructed items with white dials and clearly marked black Roman numerals and hands. This made it very easy to be able to read the time from clear across any smoke room or candlelit parlor.

Many choices of chime were available as well, with quarter, half and full hour chiming. Some more expensive models even had dials showing the weather, calendar dates and moon phases. They are one of the only styles of old clocks still in production to this day.
