Dollhouse doll

The dolls used with early 17th and 18th century dollhouses were constructed of wood or wax. Many doll makers used wax because it resembled skin more than wood or any other substance. These dolls were crudely constructed and didn’t have much facial detail. There was not a high level of craftsmanship involved.

In the 19th century, the dolls used with dollhouses changed. They were made of wood, but not as crude in their construction as the earlier dollhouse dolls. They had more facial detail than earlier dollhouse dolls. By the end of this century, dollhouse dolls were beginning to be made of glazed china. Later, they were made of bisque. These dollhouse dolls were more fragile and delicate than earlier dolls. During the 19th century, France also created its own miniature doll also known as poupees. Poupees had their own furniture, outfits, games and more.
