Bebe dolls originated in France in the mid 19th century. These dolls were created to represent children, which was quite innovative, as most other dolls up to this time period were modeled after adults. French Bebe dolls eventually would outgrow their competitive fashion dolls as far as popularity is concerned. Between the 1860s and 1880s, French Bebe dolls continued to grow in popularity and eventually countries other than France caught on to the Bebe's popularity. Bebe dolls began being made by Germans in the 1890s; the Germans became the most popular manufacturers since they could produce a high quality doll at a lower price than their rivals the French could.

French Bebe dolls were revolutionary in the doll making industry. They created a new, expensive toy for upper-class French children. They were usually sold dressed in fine doll-sized clothing that was modeled after the fashions worn in that time by children. These dolls typically had bisque heads, elegant expressions and small, child-like bodies. Today, French Bebe dolls are sold for quite an expensive fee, depending on the quality of the doll. Some French Bebe can go for as much as several thousand dollars.
