Robert Gillows is the man behind the Gillows furniture style that was created in the late 18th and early 19th centuries in London, England. Better known as the Gillows of Lancaster, Robert Gillows started his career and company out as a low level cabinetmaker’s assistant that worked on ships, utilizing his time to learn the trade.
The Gillows style of furniture appealed to both the middle class society and upper class that looked for pieces of furniture based on its style, quality and sturdiness. Even though most of his furniture pieces were sold to the middle upper class, Royalty and High-ranking officials from around the world requested several pieces.
Some of the Gillows most famous work included dining room tables, sturdy designer regal chairs and mahogany billiards table fit for a castle Like many of the Gillow’s other pieces, the billiard table showed the class, design, and strength.

The Gillows style was due in a large part to an architect named James Wyatt. His architecture ability combined with Robert Gillows eye for matching furniture with the wall color or wallpaper of a room appealed to many looking to decorate their homes. Even today decorators around the world are repeating the same pattern. They want the Gillow style, which is simply well made furniture that complements the other pieces in your room.
