The original Haviland porcelain marks were impressed directly into the undersides of the pieces made by David Haviland in Limoges, France for around a decade following 1865. "Haviland et cie." or "H & Co." were the original Haviland china marks.
The same initials in green letters, sometimes underlined, then began appearing as painted underglaze Haviland marks around 1876.
Other variations include introduction of "L" or "Limoges" as a part of the Haviland stamp, as well as "Haviland France". "Haviland & Co. Limoges" often appeared as a red overstamp.

All of these marks pertain to the original Haviland factory at Limoges under the direction of David Haviland. Later Haviland china and their respective marks were at the direction of the sons of David Haviland.
