Nelson McCoy in 1910 formed the Nelson McCoy Sanitary and Stoneware Company. The company had five shareholders at the time and was located in Roseville, Ohio. Up until 1918 it produced utility stoneware products. It also mined, sold and bought clay.
In 1918 McCoy Pottery joined eleven other companies to form the American Clay Products Company (ACPC). The new company was located in Zanesville, Ohio. It had a sales catalogue and salesmen to generate and take orders. The orders and revenue were shared among the twelve member companies.
The company operated with some success until 1926 when it was liquidated. Member companies then became independent competitors. In 1929 the Nelson McCoy Sanitary and Stoneware Company changed its name to the Nelson Sanitary Stoneware Co. it also started to mark its products. Prior to this time there is no evidence that it did so.

In 1933 the name changed again - this time to the McCoy Pottery Co. In 1967 it was sold to the Mt Clemens Co. Nelson McCoy remained president till his retirement in 1981.
In 1974 the Lancaster Colony Corporation bought the company and later in 1985 sold it to Designer Accents of New Jersey. This new company had some months earlier bought two other pottery companies and went on to acquire yet another. Some of the original McCoy lines were stopped and others continued for some time. They stopped production 1990.
The McCoy Pottery Co is different from J.W. McCoy potter established by James W. McCoy in 1899 that later became the Brush-McCoy pottery Company.
