Meat Grinder

A German baron named Karl Drais invented the meat grinder in the mid 1800’s. The design of the meat grinder has mostly stayed the same through the years. The grinder affixes to a table or countertop, and the meat is fed into the top of the grinder and is hand-cranked out the side. There are plate attachments that users can screw on to the exit point of the grinder to achieve different cuts of the ground beef, pork, venison or other meats.

Meat grinders were used for more than just cranking out raw meat. With the right plate attachments, they could dice onions and cut other vegetables, even grind up nuts.

However, neglectful users who didn’t clean the unit in a timely or complete manner would see how fast it could rust up. When the unit would be stored away for longer periods of time, it wasn’t uncommon to lube it up with some mineral oil before putting it away in a cupboard.

Finding an antique meat grinder in good working order today is a great bargain and a lovely conversation piece for any kitchen.
