Quatrefoil

A quatrefoil is a well-known symbol used in architecture and Christianity. It is a symmetrical symbol, consisting of four lobes, assembled to look like a four petal flower. The amount of overlap differs, depending on the style. Some styles have very little overlap, while others look like four overlapping hearts. In some cases, the quatrefoil is combined with a square.

A quatrefoil is most often found at the top of a gothic arch. It is displayed in artwork or in formed stained glass, creating a quatrefoil window. It was also used in Gothic architecture, in the form of Tracery, which is a series of intersecting ribs displayed in windows.

Other famous quatrefoils were created by Filippo and Piero della Francesca. Brunelleschi created The Sacrifice of Isaac and Francesca created the Head of an Angel.
