Roseville pottery

Among Antique pottery collectors, Roseville pottery is still the most popular and most collected art pottery ever produced. They were produced by the Roseville pottery company, which was established in 1890.

Initially th company produced simple utility pottery wares, such as umbrella stands, flower pots, stoneware and just a few painted ware. In 1890 Rosevile Pottery moved to Zanesville, Ohio, and by 1900 marketed art pottery called Rozane. Rozane had dark backgrounds with painted portraits featuring floral, animals, and natural scenery.

Some of the Roseville lines to follow were like the low relief style of the Egyptians and the glossy deep red vessel style of the Chinese. Apart from the Rozane, other early line patterns includes the rare designs like the Crystalis, Della, Robbia, Fudgi and Aztec. Subsequent lines includes, Cherry blossom, Dahlrose, Rosecraft, Sunflower, Ferella, Blackberry and Wisteria. These patterns were before 1935.

Pinecone had over 75 shapes in brown, green and blue. After World War II, other patterns were introduced. Among them were, Columbine, Cosmos, Futisia, White robe, Zephry lily and Bitter sweet.

The Roseville pottery company was known to adapt to the times by acquiring patterns from others, These designs were highly rated as compared to contemporaries. Nevertheless, the company ceased production in 1954. Its pottery pieces are still collectable when found in good condition. The potteries were hand painted, so the skill of the individual artist would determine the beauty of a particular piece.

Quality also differs from piece to piece. Signed pieces are valued higher than unsigned pieces. Among collectors the wisteria, pinecone and sunflower appear to be most popular.
