Tea Bowl

Tea bowls are hand built pieces used in the tea ceremonies of many Asian cultures. They seem to be best known as a Japanese ceramic pieces that are considered an essential collectible. Often, but not always undecorated, the tea bowl is usually irregularly shaped as it is hand built without the use of a wheel. The bowls are small and fit well in the hand with tall, narrow sides.

In the Momoyama period the tea ceremony had grown in popularity and had created increased demand from the tea masters. Shino ware became the tea bowl glaze most desired as it is said to be the essence of pottery. Often creation of these pieces were accompanied by ritual prayers to the gods of the kiln.

Tea Bowl The cost of a Shino ware tea bowl is similar to that of a fine house. Whereas the Shino ware is the white of snow, there are other materials used to make tea bowls of other colors and textures. Oribe ware is viewed by some authorities to be no different than Shino ware; however a copper green color identifies the Oribe ware tea bowl.

The creation of tea bowls being a free form of expression has resulted in a variety of tea bowls, none quite the same as another. Though linked primarily to the Japanese, tea bowls are known to come from China and Korea as well.
