Trompe L'oeil

Trompe L’oeil is a style of painting first created in the 16th and 17th centuries. The Trompe L’oeil technique allows the murals and portrait pieces come to life. It is defined by visual deception in which the artist uses extreme detail to make the mural or painting touchable or realistic.

Trompe L’oeil has its origin in the French language that means trick the eye. This style became extremely popular during the Renaissance. The artist would use it in murals on ceilings for their peaceful scenes or by painting a window on a wall where there wasn’t one for the purpose of amusement.

Some examples of Trompe L’oeil are by Petrus Christus for “Portrait of a Carthusian”, Johann Heinrich for “Fussli” and Pere Borrell del Caso for “Escaping Critism”. The Portrait of a Carthusian is from the mid 1400’s and has become famous because the painter added a fly to the bottom of the painting. The fly is so life like that people mistake it for being real instead of part of the painting.
Trompe L''oeil
Trompe L''oeil The “Fussli” painting is a painting of a piece of wood, with a crinkled up piece of artwork nailed to it, the painting looks as if a picture was just taken. The portrait by Pere Borrell del Caso of a little boy coming out of the frame in “Escaping Critism” is by far one of the best because it gives you the feeling that he is right in front of you.
