By the 1850's, the news of Waterford Crystal spread worldwide, and the wealthy and royal took every opportunity for a chance to own a piece of this fine craftsmanship. Unfortunately, troubled times fell upon the economy, and the taxes were so much that the company simply could not afford them. The factory was forced to close its doors, and it did not again reopen them until the late 1940's. The company was also known as Penrose Crystal, however reopened under the name Waterford, as it is known by today.
