Worcester Porcelain

The Worcester factory began in 1751. It was famous for producing gray-green porcelain with a hard, tight glaze. Worchester antiques can be easy to spot because of that tight glaze. It often shrinks away from the base of the figures.

Painters associated with Chelsea figurines began to work at the Worchester factory in 1769. Their expertise brought colorful blues, greens, and lilac shades to the porcelain. The most created works were those with white and blue colors. The blue paint was extremely durable. Worcester’s dishes were often made with this blue paint because it would not wear away, even when being used to hold vinegar!

Worcester made numerous types of dishware. The picture you see here with the famous blue and white coloring is actually a blood bowl. Using leeches to cure ailments was a popular method of medicine in the 18th century. Why not do it with style?!
Worcester Porcelain
Worcester Porcelain Worcester also created one of the smallest vases ever. Standing at 3 cm high, it was made for Queen Mary’s dollhouse.

The factory changed hands around 1783, being sold to Thomas Flight and his associate Martin Barr. Their names were added to the porcelain in 1807-1840.

Note: the other picture you see of the small white bowl, lacking color is Worcester’s portable baptism bowl. Cholera was spreading rapidly in the 1830’s and this was created so that dying children could be baptized before death.
