Hortensia Glass is a type of Opaline glass, produced between around 1820 to 1835. Also known as gorge de pigeon (French for pigeon’s throat). Hortensia glass is pink with the nacreous – similar to the sheen of mother-of-pearl – luster which is typical of Opaline glass. The glass is extremely rare, only having been produced for such a short period of time, and often fetches very high prices as a part of objects such as vases and perfume bottles.

Hortensia Glass takes its name from the Hydrangea plant (also known as the Hortensia), which, depending on the species, can possess a mild purple or intense pink flower. Both shades lend their colors to Hortensia Glassware. The French were the main producers of Hortensia Glass in that relatively short period of production.
