refinishing

Refinishing is a process applied to antique pieces, by an artisan or restorer. During this process, the top coat of an artwork is sanded back and a new finish is applied, using varnish or paint. This application is usually done when the original surface has been damaged or worn. Refinishing is commonly applied to wood, glass, metal, plastic and paint.

Refinishing wood items, however, is sometime referred to as repolishing. Many antique items were made of mahogany, walnut, maple and cherry. These furniture items were hard to preserve and sometimes poorly kept, requiring a new finish.

refinishing Many antique collectors and historians have conflicting opinions about refinishing antique originals. Some believe that wear and tear on antique items gives it character and tells its personal story. They believe if you take away the finish, the history of the piece is gone, taking away its character, rarity and worth.

Others believe that refinishing adds beauty and elegance to the antique pieces and also preserves the piece, so it can be admired for many years to come. Most antique enthusiasts and museum curators aim to keep antique items as close to its original state as possible.
