When shopping for antique toys, it is important to know that many manufacturers try to pass off replica toys as the real thing. A replica is a new toy that has been recreated to look much like its antique counterpart. There are also several other terms that fall under this category, such as: Forgeries, which are copies that have been purposefully created to fool consumers into thinking they are an actual antique.
Fakes, which are toys that have been modified in such a way that they look like they are truly antique.
Restored toys are those that are actually antiques, but have been refurbished by using new parts and/or paint.

Replica boxes are new boxes that are used to house an actual antique toy. Although some collectors consider these to fall under the restored category, others feel that they are nothing more than a fake.
To know for sure if a toy you are planning to buy is a true antique, or just a cleverly designed fake, you should look for original markings, such as a date, a manufacturers signature, or even a manufacturer’s logo, that will allow you to not only make a wise purchase, but also a smart investment.
