Sand toys have been around for quite some time. However, there is some debate as to when they came into existence. Some say that they came about in the 17th century, and during that time they became popular among the Germans, French, and Italians. Others have said that they were actually developed around 1800 in France, and that their popularity occurred until sometime in the 1880’s. Lastly, it has been said that it wasn’t until the 1850’s that sand toys began to gain popularity in the United States. It was at that time that The Tower Guild of South Hingham, which was a toy company located in the United States, created both tinplate and wooden toys that were able to move through the use of paddle wheels and chutes.

Sand toys are not only quite interesting to look at, but they are also very ingeniously created. Many were made with materials such as wood and lithographed paper to create an aesthetically appealing toy. To make it even more fun, shifting sand, as well as the use of gravity, was used to make the toy move as if powered by a battery or electricity. The sand is often used to move a wheel that in turn brings a figure or scene to life.
